Food in Senegal

Senegalese cuisine is rich and varied, influenced by French, Portuguese, and Arab cultures. Senegalese like to eat rice, fish, chicken, vegetables, and fruits.
Some of the typical Senegalese dishes are:
- Thieboudienne: the national dish of Senegal, which consists of rice cooked in fish stock with tomatoes, onions, carrots, and other vegetables. The fish is served on top of the rice with tamarind or lemon sauce.
- Yassa: marinated chicken or fish fried in a pan with onion, lemon, mustard, and chili. Served with rice or couscous.
- Maafe: peanut butter sauce with meat (beef, chicken, or lamb), vegetables (pumpkin, sweet potato, carrot), and spices (coriander, turmeric, chili). Served with rice or bread.
- Thiakry: a sweet dessert of couscous mixed with yogurt, sugar, and dried fruit (raisins, dates, apricots). Sometimes vanilla or cinnamon is also added.
